A vulnerability was found in Apache Tomcat (Application Server Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown processing of the file sendmail.jsp of the component Error Message Handler. The manipulation of the argument mailfrom with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. Impacted is integrity. An attacker might be able to inject arbitrary html and script code into the web site. This would alter the appearance and would make it possible to initiate further attacks against site visitors.

The weakness was disclosed 07/21/2007 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-3383 since 06/25/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/21/2021). The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25995 (Apache Tomcat SendMailServlet sendmail.jsp ‘mailfrom’ Parameter XSS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses : XSS.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
