The issue has been introduced in 11/17/2003. The weakness was published 08/12/2008 by Ruben Santamarta (iDefense) with reversemode.com (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-0120 since 01/07/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 08/01/2021).
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1730 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33880 (MS08-051: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft PowerPoint Could Allow Remote Code Execution (949785)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110083 (Microsoft PowerPoint Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS08-051)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6284.
