A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer 2003 (Presentation Software). This issue affects some unknown functionality. A “memory calculation error” in Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer 2003 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a PowerPoint file with an invalid picture index that triggers memory corruption, aka “Memory Calculation Vulnerability.”
The issue has been introduced in 11/17/2003. The weakness was released 08/12/2008 by Ruben Santamarta (iDefense) with reversemode.com (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-0121 since 01/07/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/01/2021).
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1730 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33880 (MS08-051: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft PowerPoint Could Allow Remote Code Execution (949785)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110083 (Microsoft PowerPoint Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS08-051)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6295.
