The weakness was disclosed 12/14/2009 as Bug 546321 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-4136 since 12/01/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68044 (Oracle Linux 5 : postgresql (ELSA-2010-0429)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155662 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for PostgreSQL (ELSA-2010-0427)).
Upgrading to version 8.2.11 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
