It is declared as proof-of-concept. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50636 (RHEL 6 : freetype (RHSA-2010:0864)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context local. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118377 (FreeType Compact Font Format (CFF) Multiple Stack Based Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 2.1.7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.savannah.gnu.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
