State Department hit by cyber attack amid Afghan evacuation: report

The US State Department was hit with a new cyber attack in recent weeks, Fox News reported Saturday — as diplomats’ efforts to evacuate Americans and refugees from Afghanistan become ever more desperate.

The extent of the risk to the department’s internal operations remained unknown, but officials insisted that the incursion — discovered by the Department of Defense’s Cyber Command — has had no impact on its Afghanistan mission.

“The Department takes seriously its responsibility to safeguard its information and continuously takes steps to ensure information is protected,” a State Department spokesperson said.

The department was one of dozens of federal agencies — and thousands of private data networks — hit in December’s massive SolarWinds breach, which was widely blamed on Russia-based hackers.
