USA, UK Condemn Iran for Attack on Oil Tanker off the Coast of Oman

The United States and the United Kingdom have joined Israel in condemning the alleged “suicide drone” attack by Iran on an oil tanker ‘Mercer Street’ off the coast of Oman in the Arabian Sea according to a report by the Associated Press.

The Liberian flagged vessel, owned by Japan’s Taihei Kaiun Co., is being managed by London-based Zodiac Maritime – a subsidiary of Israel’s Zodiac Group.

According to the report, the attack resulted in a hole blasted through the top of the oil tanker’s bridge killing two crew members, one each from the United Kingdom and Romania.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said that Israeli intelligence had evidence linking Iran to the attack but it has not been made public as yet.

Attacks on commercial vessels passing through the region began in 2019, about a year after the US withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal.
